The predecessor of Guangzhou Image Triennial was Guangzhou Photo Biennial hosted by Guangdong Museum of Art. Since its establishment in 2005, four exhibitions have been held. Each one had its distinct theme, with a close attention to the relationship between images and era, history, society, and humanity while tracking the birth and the sociological constitutions of images, this series of events have accumulated abundant academic resources for the research and collection of contemporary image art.

Guangdong Museum of Art has been proactively preparing for the 2021 Guangzhou Image Triennial since 2019. Multiple seminars have been held to enable profound discussions regarding the project’s academic prospects and this year’s curation goal among scholars around the globe. Considering the academic stand of Guangdong Museum of Art, this year’s exhibition will be a combination of Theme Exhibition and Archive Exhibition with a continuing focus on the actively
evolving world of image art and the potential of this art form to diversify its showcasing technique. Archive Exhibition will feature a series of literature from the 2005 Guangzhou Photo Biennial to the Guangzhou Image Triennial 2017 in a carefully arranged chronological order. The curator team of Guangzhou Image Triennial 2021 has been officially appointed after much consideration. The exhibition will be postponed to March 2021 due to concerns about the COVID19 pandemic.
