Marlene Dumas es una artista nacida en Cape Town, Sudáfrica en 1953. Vive y trabaja en Amsterdam. Sus pinturas son mayormente realizadas al óleo o acuarela, y se basan en la representación del cuerpo humano para abordar problemáticas como el sexo, la raza, la muerte o ciertos estados mentales que evidencian una fuerte violencia simbólica. Sus trabajos tienen una apariencia diluida, como de boceto u obra inconclusa, y muchas veces apelan a recursos como el grotesco y lo trágico. Se encuentra entre las artistas vivas más cotizadas. Una de sus pinturas (The Visitor) fue vendida en la subasta Sotheby’s de Londres en 2008 por 6.3 millones de dólares.

Marlene Dumas was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1953. She lives and works in Amsterdam. Her paintings are mostly made with oil or watercolor and are based on the representation of the human body to address issues such as sex, race, death, or certain mental states that show strong symbolic violence. Her paintings have a diluted appearance, like a sketch or unfinished work, and many times they appeal to resources such as the grotesque and the tragic. She is among the most expensive living artists. One of her paintings (“The Visitor”) was sold at Sotheby’s London in 2008 for $ 6.3 million.
