Lonnie Hollye nació en 1950 en Birmingham, Alabama. Nació en el sur racista donde aún existían las leyes conocidas como Jim Crow, las cuales promulgaban la segregación racial y limitaban los derechos civiles de la población afrodescendiente.
Lonnie Hollye comienza hacer arte a partir de sus 29 años. No realiza sólo obras de artes visuales sino también música.
Como en la tradición escultórica afroamericana, Holley trabaja básicamente con objetos encontrados. Tal “metodología” no sólo le permite improvisar sino que puede maniobrar con sus significados previos. Ensamblar objetos y contenidos. Su discurso artístico, armado a partir de violentas vivencias personales –Holley no tuvo una infancia propiamente dicha-, y de su pertenencia a una comunidad discriminada, es visualmente e ideológicamente potente.
Reusar, reciclar, rehacer son palabras claves en su práctica. Metal, plástico, artefactos, cruces, constituyen el caparazón de sus esculturas de aliento totémico.



Lonnie Hollye was Born in 1950, in the Jim Crow-era, Birmingham, Alabama: The deep, racist South. At 29, he became an artist. Hollye is a multimedia artist who not only creates visual works but music too.
Following the Afro-American sculpture tradition, Holley mainly Works with found materials or found objects. This “methodology” allows him to improvise and also show, at some point, their previous meanings. Assemble objects and content.
His artistic discourse, built from his violent personal experiences –Holley did not have a proper childhood -, of his belonging to a discriminated community, is visually and ideologically powerful. Full of “exuberant energy”.
Reusing, recycling, redoing are key words in his practice. Metal, plastic, artifacts, crosses, constitute the core of his totemic sculptures.
