Mark Bradford (1961) es un artista afro-americano nacido en Los Ángeles, Estados Unidos, que ha tenido una carrera meteórica.  A la edad de 35 años tuvo su primer título en arte. ¿Qué hacía antes de eso? Ayudaba a su madre en su salón de peluquería en la ciudad californiana de LA.

Bradford es reconocido y admirado por sus grandes composiciones abstractas, resumidas en lo que él ha denominado “abstracción social”, pues sus obras hablan de raza, género y sociedad pero sobre todo porque sus pinturas no son pinturas en sentido estricto sino que se vale de todo el material –sobre todo papel- encontrado en el entorno urbano: posters, anuncios… recolectados en las calles. Él va pegando, licuando a veces, lijando, capas y capas de papeles que en sí ya tienen una información antropológica interesantísima. El resultado visual parece informalista y lleno de texturas. Él pinta con papel.

Puede decirse que su “pintura” es una pintura “cargada” en el sentido religioso de la prenda afrocubana. Su “pintura” no es narcisista: no mira hacia sí, sino hacia el exterior.

En 2016 obtuvo la MacArthur Genius Grant y en 2017 representó a Estados Unidos en la 57th Bienal de Venecia. En 2017 se inauguró Pickett’s Charge, un mega mural, en el Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC.

Mark Bradford (B. 1961) is an African-American artist from Los Angeles, CA, who has had a meteoric career in the art world.

When he was 35 years old He earned a BFA in the  California Institute of the Arts. What did he do before that? He helped his mother at her hairdresser salón in LA.

Bradford is recognized and admired for his great abstract compositions, summarized in what he has called “social abstraction”, because his works speak of race, gender and society, but above all because his paintings are not paintings in the strict sense. He uses all the material –especially paper- found in the urban environment: posters, advertisements… collected in the streets. Sometimes he liquefies the paper, glues, sands layers and layers of papers that already have very interesting anthropological information. The visual result seems informal and full of textures. He literally paints with paper.

It can be said that his “painting” is a “loaded” painting in the sense of the Afro-Cuban religious practice. His “painting” is not narcissistic: it does not look towards itself, but towards the exterior.

In 2016 he obtained the MacArthur Genius Grant and in 2017 he represented the United States at the 57th Venice Biennale. In 2017 it was inaugurated Pickett’s Charge, a mega mural on display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC.
